一切色彩都离不开光。可以说，色彩是一种可见光的光波在视觉上的一种反映。1676年，英国物理学家牛顿发现了日光透过三棱镜后会折射出红、橙、黄、绿、青、蓝、紫七色。

物体都有反射和吸收不同色光的特征。呈红色的是因为它有反射红色光而吸收其他光的特性，白色的物体反射所有的光，黑色物体吸收所有的光。
